Photo of the Day: ‘Binn idir an dá Log | Maumturks’ by Tom Fahy.

Binn idir an dá Log is a mountain in the Maumturks. Viewed here from the eastern slopes of Knocknahillion. The lake at Maumahoge marks the midpoint of the Maumturks range, lying just east of their more famous neighbours, the Twelve Bens, and stretching from Maam Cross to Leenaun.

Photo of the Day: ‘Torr Head’ by Mark Foster.
A desolate yet atmospheric view from the top of Torr Head towards an abandoned house situated on the Antrim coastline. This headland was important in the 1800s for recording the passage of transatlantic ships, relaying the information back to Lloyds of London. It was often the last hope for Scottish clans beckoning aid from allies in Argyllshire. The walls and ruins of Altagore cashel date back to the sixth century.

Photo of the Day: ‘Looking towards the dunes ’ by Sally Wookey.

Owners Description: Taken at Gibraltar Point in Skegness, an RSPB reserve. There are two rows of dunes separated by salt marsh, which plays host to a range of seabirds. The dunes on the photo were under the sea in the early 1900s. The sea has slowly retreated eastwards forming these new lines of dunes.

Photo of the Day: ’ Carraroe Coral Beach (Trá an Dóilin)’ by gerard conran.

An Cheathrú Rua is a village in County Galway, Ireland. The village is within the Irish-speaking region (Gaeltacht) of Connemara, and is famous for its traditional fishing boats known as Galway Hookers.

Carraroe has an unusual ‘coral’ beach, Trá an Dóilín, a biogenic gravel beach actually made of coralline algae known as “maerl”.

Photo of the Day: ‘Kildonan’ by Stephen Maxwell.
Kildonan is a village on the south coast of the Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. The name Kildonan derives from Saint Donan who is reputedly buried in the village. Early life in the village revolved around Kildonan Castle. Once a royal seat, the castle passed hands between various Scottish nobles, before latterly belonging to the Hamilton family in 1544, by which time they were the Earls of Arran. The castle was later sacked and burnt by the Earl of Sussex around 1558. Ruined remains of the building are still in existence.

Photo of the Day: ‘Long Walk Moonlit’ by Brendan Cox.

This should be a familiar site to all people who come from or have spent time in Galway. The full moon adds to the beauty of the scene, one which has become symbolic of Galway and is featured in the Guinness advert at Christmas time.

Photo of the Day: ‘April Aurora ’ by David Porter.
Aurora activity again in the north of Ireland (Co.Donegal) during April , members of the Buncrana Camera Club were out in force to capture this spectacular event , rarely seen this far south . Auroras result from emissions of photons in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, above 80 km (50 mi), from ionized nitrogen atoms regaining an electron, and oxygen and nitrogen atoms returning from an excited state to ground state. They are ionized or excited by the collision of solar wind and magnetospheric particles being funneled down and accelerated along the Earth’s magnetic field lines; excitation energy is lost by the emission of a photon, or by collision with another atom or molecule… !
